Needle Length

Needle length varies according to purpose and target tissue depth. For example, intramuscular injections necessitate longer needles capable of penetrating deep muscle layers, while subcutaneous injections require relatively shorter ones.

A 3/8" to 3/4" needle is recommended for intradermal injection whereas needles between 7/8" to 1-1/2" are designed for intramuscular injections. 1/2" to 5/8" needles are made for subcutaneous injections and may be overlapped for use with intradermal injections as well.

How to use a hypodermic needle?

  1. 1.Connect the hypodermic needle tip to a suitable syringe ( luer lock or luer slip tip)

  2. 2.Ensure the plunger is pushed forward. This ensures the correct substance is drawn and no air enters the syringe

  3. 3.Insert the needle & syringe into the fluid substance (medication) or directly into the patient if taking blood

  4. 4.Slowly & carefully pull back the syringe plunger, to extract blood or fill the syringe with fluid

  5. 5.To dispense fluid, place the needle into the patient at a 45-90 degree angle (in the correct area/zone), slowly & carefully pushing the plunger forward.

  6. 6.Dispose of the syringe & needle appropriately (in the correct sharp waste containers, based on what medication & substances the needle and syringe have come in contact with)
